I’ve Given it Thought
I’ve given thought to giving up pipe smoking. I asked my Angels about it and like other things it is up to me. I’m due for a new pipe and living on retirement funds I have to decide how we spend our money. I’ve given thought to buying a ten in one stereo system, but decided I’d rather spend that money on a new pipe instead. I have Spotify for music and don’t need a music system.
I put some pipes in our wishlist on Amazon and chose a few I like on the Smoking Pipes website. I lost a good pipe this past week as I noticed a crack in my best estate pipe. I’ve lost several pipes in the past year and need some to replace the old ones. Some I don’t smoke much for sentimental reasons and want to keep those in good shape.
A pipe can last forever if it is well cared for, but as they are used problems develop. I’ve never burned out a pipe but over time they will crack and develop problems. It’s why I have so many and most I no longer smoke for various reasons. I have my first pipe I have kept in pristine condition smoking it only so often.
I have a cracked Peterson pipe I’d like to replace with one like it. But it’s why old guys have so many pipes. Lasting for generations just depends. Heat always causes problems. And many collectors have pipes they smoke and pipes they collect. I smoke all my pipes but some I smoke more than others. Heat and time are enemies of pipes. Besides which, I don’t smoke five bowls a week and some hobbiests do. Depending on the pipe, I smoke five to ten bowls a day. And I’m a puffer.
I’m hard on pipes, I will admit. It’s why I don’t want to spend a lot on pipes. I use my pipes. A number of less expensive pipes are better for me rather than one or two good ones. I have a Dunhill I’ve had now for a few years and I have pretty much retired it.
I have a very old Ben Wade I’ve retired now. The side wall of it is now quite weak. The briar quality in today’s pipe isn’t what it was fifty years ago when I first started pipe smoking. Depending on use and rotation a pipe today may last just a few years which is why collectors don’t smoke a lot of pipes they collect. There are a lot of unsmoked estate pipes these days.
Pipes are an hobby and like any hobby, it doesn’t make money unless the hobby is a business. I smoke pipes and am hard on pipes so I don’t want very expensive pipes. I’m not a collector but care more about the tobacco I smoke. I have tried several hundred tobaccos over the years and have my favorites. I am more of a tobacconist than I am a pipe collector. My pipe this morning is the only Tim West pipe I own and it is from the late 80’s, but is still in good shape. My tobacco is Peter Stokkebye English Luxury. My coffee this morning is from Costs Rica. Thank you for your time and Peace and Love to each one of you.
Dave
